How to Start a Whiskey Collection Without Overwhelming Yourself
A practical starting point for building a whiskey collection, from budget to bottle selection.
Starting a whiskey collection can feel intimidating once you start reading about six-figure bottles and secondary market frenzies. None of that is where an actual collection needs to begin.
Start with what you'd actually drink
The best starting point for a collection isn't a rare bottle. It's a handful of whiskeys you'd genuinely enjoy drinking, across a few different styles: a standard bourbon, a wheated bourbon, a rye, maybe a barrel proof release. A collection built around genuine interest holds up better over time than one built around chasing hype.
Set a budget before you set a goal
Decide what you're comfortable spending before you start picking bottles, not after. Collecting can escalate quickly once secondary markets and limited releases enter the picture, and a clear budget set in advance is the easiest way to keep the hobby enjoyable rather than stressful.
Diversity matters more than depth, early on
Rather than buying multiples of the same bottle, prioritize variety early in a collection: different mash bills, different proofs, different distilleries. This builds a foundation for comparison and helps you figure out what you actually gravitate toward before you start investing more seriously in any one direction.
Keep records from the start
Track what you buy, when, and what you paid, along with your own tasting notes. This habit is easy to skip early on and hard to reconstruct later, and it becomes genuinely valuable once a collection grows past a dozen or so bottles.
You don't need to open everything, but you don't need to hoard everything either
Some collectors keep every bottle sealed. Others open everything immediately. A reasonable middle ground, opening most bottles while keeping a few genuinely special ones sealed, tends to be the most satisfying approach for someone just getting started, since a collection that's never actually tasted misses most of the point.
Where a whiskey club fits in
A well-run whiskey club, ours included, does some of this legwork for you: introducing variety, providing context on what makes each release worth trying, and building a collection with intention rather than randomly.
How Maria's Whiskey Club supports new collectors
We think a good starting collection should teach you something with every bottle, not just accumulate inventory, and we build the Club's release schedule with that in mind.
