Why Some Craft Whiskey Isn't Distilled Where the Label Says

Not every bottle from a young distillery was actually distilled there, and that's not necessarily a problem, as long as it's disclosed honestly.

Not every bottle from a young distillery was actually distilled there, and that's not necessarily a problem, as long as it's disclosed honestly.

The real constraint behind aging

Aging whiskey ties up money for years before a barrel is ready to sell. Large distilleries can absorb that wait easily. Small ones often can't, at least not without help.

Smaller barrels speed things up

Using barrels smaller than the standard size increases how much wood surface area touches the whiskey relative to its volume, letting a small distillery produce something genuinely barrel-aged in months instead of years.

Sourcing bridges the gap

Many young distilleries buy whiskey in bulk from large contract producers while their own barrels mature, then bottle it under their own label. Done transparently, this is a completely legitimate way to offer an aged product early on.

What to watch for

The concern isn't sourcing itself, it's when a distillery implies whiskey was made in-house when it wasn't. A distillery that's upfront about where a whiskey came from deserves more trust than one that leaves the question deliberately vague.

Ask us next time you're in whether a specific bottle was distilled on-site or sourced. We ask distilleries this directly, and we'll tell you what we know.
