What Actually Makes a Whiskey "Rare"
The word gets used loosely, and it's worth knowing what really creates scarcity versus what's just a label choice.

Limited runs and discontinued bottles
A small original production run, or a whiskey that's simply no longer made, are the clearest sources of genuine rarity. Discontinued expressions often become rarer gradually, not all at once.
Regional allocation
A bottle can be common in one part of the country and genuinely hard to find in another, purely because of how a distillery distributes it.
Age isn't the same as rarity
An old whiskey made in large quantities isn't automatically rare. A young whiskey made in tiny quantities can be. The two often overlap, but neither guarantees the other.
Watch secondary market hype
A high resale price sometimes reflects genuine scarcity, and sometimes just reflects a moment of demand. It's worth knowing the difference before paying a premium.
