Bourbon Deep Dive

Low-Proof Bourbon for Everyday Sipping

Not every night calls for a bold, high-proof pour, and low-proof bourbon deserves more credit than it usually gets.

Not every night calls for a bold, high-proof pour, and low-proof bourbon deserves more credit than it usually gets.

What "low-proof" actually means

Most bourbons in the 80-90 proof range fall into this category. That's the legal minimum bottling proof for bourbon on the low end, which means these bottlings sit right at the floor rather than pushing well past it.

Why that's a genuine advantage, not a compromise

Less alcohol in the bottle means less of it standing between you and the flavor. Vanilla, light caramel, and soft oak tend to come through clearly in a low-proof bourbon, without the heat of a higher-proof pour pulling focus away from them. It's an easier whiskey to sip slowly over a longer evening.

Good for sharing

Low-proof bourbon works well for gatherings where not everyone at the table is a serious whiskey drinker. It's approachable without being watered-down in character, which makes it a safer choice when you're pouring for a mixed group rather than a lineup of collectors.

Not just a beginner's pick

It's tempting to assume low-proof bourbon is only for people newer to whiskey, but that undersells it. Several well-regarded, widely collected bourbons sit in this proof range. The gentler proof doesn't mean a gentler whiskey overall, just a different set of priorities in how it was finished.

When to reach for it

A low-proof bourbon makes the most sense for a longer evening, a relaxed dinner, or any night where you want something you can sip for a while without it demanding your full attention.

Ask us next time you're in which of our lower-proof bottles are worth trying. We keep a solid selection specifically for nights like that.
